Building Synergy

November 8th, 2007

Few years ago, a hydropower developer complained at a public forum. The gist of his complaint was that every engineer he approached for advice on building his small hydropower plant provided a different solution. This left him totally confused, and he concluded that engineers themselves did not know what they were talking about. This may still ring true for many developers today in Nepal, as they desperately try to figure out how best to develop hydropower projects.
One of Hydro Solutions’ missions is to “support the entire hydropower ecosystem, ensuring its sustainable and profitable growth, benefiting the participants and all stakeholders”. We have positioned ourselves as a one stop shop to all hydropower business with the intention of helping you start, grow and succeed in hydropower business.
But being a one-stop-shop is not an easy task. The hydropower ecosystem is vast and requires expertise in highly technical aspects; such as river hydraulics and power evacuation studies, as well as non-technical issues such as environment and people’s livelihood. The sector demands knowledge of existing rules, policies, and regulations as well as knowledge on insurance, and project financing, not to mention contracts, technology, and many others.
Hydro Solutions is set up to be a service provider in all these issues. Naturally we do not have full time employees in our core staff that can provide these services. We feel there is a better way to be able to provide these services.
We believe in creating synergy among colleagues in the sector. We are aware that a lot of the services required for the industry are being provided by different groups in Nepal and abroad. Our intention is not to redo what has already been perfected by others but rather to add value to what they are already doing by bringing all of them under one umbrella. I believe many in the sector would agree with this approach and be appreciative of it.
Therefore we are actively seeking affiliates. We are interested in working together with groups of like minded service providers who see value in synergy. We are already discussing affiliate agreements with some key service providers and experts in Kathmandu and in India. We are interested to see if there are others who we have not been able to reach, that would be interested in joining hands with us. There is plenty of room for cooperation and we believe we will be doing a lot of good to the sector if we can move forward in this direction. We welcome individuals and organizations that would like to join hands with us to provide their services through us. If you are interested please email me at kumar@hydro-solutions.org.
